Great things come in pairs; blue cheese and fig, chocolate and chilli, and of course Champagne and oysters………But Two Pairs? Even better.
Meet Katherine (aka Nina) and Kathryn (aka Kate). They share more than a name, having married identical twin brothers after both studying winemaking at University.
Katherine (Nina) was born in Switzerland close to the French border and the Alsace wine region, where her family was heavily involved in the local vineyard. With winemaking well and truly in her blood, she embarked on a Bachelor of Science and Arts degree from Monash University, before following up her studies with a Postgraduate degree in Winemaking at the University of Adelaide.
Her journey of Oenology has seen her hone her craft in vineyards across McLaren Vale, the Yarra Valley, Barolo (Italy), Rhone Valley (France), Alentejo (Portugal), and New Zealand. It was in New Zealand that Nina was appointed Chief Winemaker for the Catalina Sounds, Crowded House and Nanny Goat wines as part of the Endeavour Vineyards, and saw her awarded the prized Air New Zealand best Sauvignon Blanc Trophy.
Settling back in Australia, Nina decided to come full-circle by working once again with her parents in their vineyard, ‘Brave Goose,’ in the foothills of the Tallarook ranges of Central Victoria. She continues as winemaker for Brave Goose Vineyard and is supported by her husband John and two young children, who like her, love growing up in the wide-open spaces of the land.
“After many varied and eclectic experiences in Australia and abroad, it is brilliant to have an opportunity to work with Naked Wines and my extraordinary sister-in-law to make wines from a diverse range of varieties, microclimates and wine styles – it truly is a winemakers dream.”
Kathryn’s (Kate) foray into winemaking was not as ‘traditional’ as her sister-in-law, although you could say that her family partook in ‘distribution’ in the form of countless Sundays spent entertaining guests at their home in Cronulla, NSW.
After initially moving to Wagga Wagga in country NSW to study Bachelor of Applied Science (Viticulture), to learn from the ground up (literally), she went on to fine-tune her craft with a Postgraduate degree in Winemaking at the University of Adelaide, where she met Nina. This was the start of the pair’s journey together which would see them enjoy their love of sampling and acquainting themselves with local and international wines (in the name of study, of course!), and end with Nina meeting her future husband John, twin of Kate’s husband Micah, at Kate’s wedding in a vineyard (naturally).
Kate too has continued to develop her skill set across vineyards in Tasmania, the Hunter Valley, McLaren Vale, Eden Valley, Central Victoria, Marlborough (NZ), the Napa Valley (California), and Burgundy (France). Her accolades among many include having two wines in consecutive years as finalists for the prestigious Jimmy Watson trophy when she was winemaking for Willunga 100 McLaren Vale. Now settled in the picturesque Mudgee region with Micah and their two young boys, she successfully runs her own wine consulting business consulting to wineries both domestically and abroad.
“After 15 years of making wine all over Australia and the world for other people, I knew that my sister-in-law was the only person that I would truly want to go into business with. Given our experience, varied strengths and knowledge of excellent fruit sources and the fact that we completely compliment each other – Ying and Yang, chalk and cheese. Pair that with a collaboration with Naked Wines, who are tireless in their support of independent Australian winemakers, and the fact that we will be the first female winemaking duo available via Naked Wines Australia; it’s definitely something to cheers to!”
And so begins the story of Two Pairs, a brand entwined with family and hopefully enjoyed by all.
Two winemakers, marry identical twins =
Two pairs joined by friendship, marriage and love of wine
